Muay Thai Classes for Self Defense

whitney GenesisThe ability for one to be able to defend themselves is always something great to have but when it becomes a necessity, one would rather tell a tale of how lucky they were to have had the foresight to be prepared, rather than tell a story of how they wished they had been prepared.

The sad reality of modern day living is that something like having the ability to defend yourself could prove to be very vital — so vital that it could be a matter of life and death or one which could help you avoid a very traumatic eventuality with a number of heartless and cruel perpetrators roaming the face of this earth, just waiting to cause trouble for others, and they generally tend to go for targets which appear to be weaker.

Now, there are a number of ways through which one could prepare themselves for any situation which would require them to defend themselves, one of which is via the combative arts and the advantage of doing so through the combative arts is that it is completely legal and doesn’t come with complications of something like requiring a firearm license.

On top of that, preparing yourself for self defense via the combative arts also entails the process of constructing a much fitter and healthier body, so it isn’t done for the sole purpose of preparing for self defense situations, but rather as a holistic approach to a better quality of life, in a very natural way.

The focus will be placed squarely on the combative art of Muay Thai for self defense and Muay Thai makes a very strong case as to why it is the best form of the combative arts for self defense preparation. Muay Thai for self defense gets its effectiveness mainly in the fact that Muay Thai is a traditional form of the fighting arts, which means it isn’t as well known as some of the other forms of the combative arts.

How that is advantageous comes through the fact that a perpetrator who is suddenly faced with an onslaught from someone who makes use of the fighting principles of Muay Thai, does not know how to effectively react to the somewhat unorthodox striking methods that come standard with Muay Thai, so it is very likely to be much more effective than any other standard combative art form.

In addition to that, Muay Thai is very specific in which parts of the body can be used in combat, hence the name “The science of the eight limbs”, with more of a focus on striking combat to either deliver a decisive blow to the opponent or gradually wear them down by constant pelting.

Muay Thai practitioners who also practice other forms of the combative arts, or those who have previously been involved in other forms of the combative arts, are very likely to claim that they would choose Muay Thai in real life combat if they had to choose just one out of all the combative arts they practice.

How to Care for your Boxing Gloves

Women's Muay ThaiSo you’ve gotten a new pair of gloves and you want to make sure you get your money’s worth out of them.  For the most part a decent pair of gloves will last at least a year if you don’t do anything to prolong their life.

So what can you do?  Sweat will weaken the stitching, breakdown the foam and make them stink so much you won’t want to keep your hands anywhere near your face when you train. By following the tips below, not only will they last much longer, but your nose and your training partners will thank you.

1. Freeze ‘em Out – Placing your gloves in your freezer after training overnight will help kill the bacteria in your gloves.  Make sure you put them in a plastic bag first.  The next morning, pull your gloves out and move on to step 2.

2. Air them out Immediately – Once you pull them out of the freezer, place a paper towel roll inside each one to help the air circulate.  Placing them on an air vent will help speed up the process. Bacteria need a moist humid environment to grow.  Placing them in direct sunlight will also help is available.  Getting a vent rack for drying winter boots works great.

3. Use Bacteria Spray – Lysol or Febreeze will help to freshen the scent of the gloves and help  kill some of the bacteria.  If you are in a pinch and forget to do the above, or don’t have time between sessions, this is your best bet.  Make sure it they have time to dry.

4. Don’t Leave them in your Gym Bag – This is the worst thing you can do.  It’s dark, humid and has poor ventilation.  Leaving you gear in your bag will speed up the process and you will suffer with smelly gear or having to buy new gloves.

The same steps can be used for all your gear.  This will save you a lot of frustration with smelly and degrading gear as well as prevent rashes and other skin diseases from popping up.  By following the steps above you will get bored of your gloves long before they break down or become unbearably stinky.

Venturing Into Muay Thai

Beginners to the combative art of Muay Thai can be grouped into two different categories, one — Muay Thai beginners who have some experience of another form of the combative arts and seek to make a transition, and two — Muay Thai beginners who come into the combative arts with nothing but an idea and the desire to get started, which means they have absolutely no experience of the formalized combative arts whatsoever.

In both the instances of those who have some prior knowledge of another form of the combative arts, as well as those who do not have any knowledge of the combative arts (street fighting doesn’t count), what they will know is that the road ahead requires some dedication of their time, the amount which depends on just how far they want to go with their craft, as well as a desire to learn as they go along.

A separate look at both these paths is necessary though, so as to know exactly where you stand as the novice Muay Thai practitioner, particularly because Mauy Thai is one of the most unique fighting styles in existence today, integrated with a lot of the general traditional values of the native land of the sport, the nation of Thailand.

Venturing into Muay Thai as a Complete Novice

If you are getting into Muay Thai from a standing start, what you will already know about the formalized world of the combative arts is that there is a certain collection of rules and laws within which you will be required to operate and that is no different with Muay Thai, so you will have to be prepared to embark on a little bit of an educational journey and learn the basic fundamentals of the Muay Thai fighting style.

Once you are well-schooled on the fundamentals of the science of the eight limbs, you will shift your focus to perfecting those basics, with the help and guidance of your instructors of course but, depending on just how far you seek to progress with your craft, some extra, supplementary training and practice should be on the cards.

The basics are great to have — in fact the basics are an essential part of the learning process so that you never have to try and rectify any bad habits you may have learned early on in your Muay Thai career, which are scrutinized very closely as your level of competition increases with your advancement, so you will have to spend some time learning the basics and perfecting them, which is something a lot of beginners rush to get passed.

Venturing into Muay Thai from another Combative Art Form

If you are fortunate enough to have had experience in another form of the formalized combative arts, your transition into Muay Thai may prove to be only slightly easier than a complete novice, but it could go either way actually since you might have a hard time trying to unlearn some of the habits of other fighting styles, which are illegal in Muay Thai or just prove to be completely frivolous, so the best approach is to go at it like a complete novice.

Muay Thai – The Science of the Eight Limbs

Certainly one of the more traditional forms of the fighting arts, Muay Thai actually proves to be one of the most effective fighting styles, which can be deployed beyond the formal structure of the boxing ring, with Muay Thai proving to be one of the most rapidly growing combative arts since it spread beyond the borders of where it originated, in the Asian country of Thailand.

The science of the eight limbs, or the art of the eight limbs, as Muay Thai is known, is popular because of its explosive practicality — the kind of practicality which can be used outside of the ring in situations that would call for someone to be able to defend themselves, so it is a great way for novice combative artists to find their feet inside the borders of the world of the combative arts.

While Muay Thai is still very much catching on around the world and certainly in the Western world as well, back in its native land of Thailand it is a matter of life and death, where the young boys of a number of families aspire to become Muay Thai practitioners, as a means through which to escape poverty and provide a better life for their families.

This is the reason why Muay Thai is so big back in Thailand, with a lot of money exchanging hands in the process, so it is probably every Western Muay Thai practitioner’s dream to at least witness the Muay Thai scene as it in the combative art’s native land of Thailand.

The rest of the world is doing their bit to catch up to that type of level however, although it will probably never hold so much significance for practitioners of other parts of the world as it does in Thailand, but that is not to say the Muay Thai scene beyond the borders of Thailand isn’t advanced.

The traditional element which comes integrated with the mere act of participating in something like Muay Thai is enough inspiration for novice practitioners to want to take their art further and reach the kind of levels amassed by their Eastern counterparts, so the entire Western establishments which are actively involved in the facilitation and consumption of the Muay Thai combative art will do their best to ensure they gradually develop positively.

Muay Thai is certainly growing very rapidly as one of the most preferred forms of the combative arts, so it is best to get in on the action as a beginner, so as to learn the art as it evolves in the new world, of which the benefits thereof take the form of areas which are seemingly not linked with the actual sport, like mental sharpness and the development of a number of important life skills.

Muay Thai practitioners also have the advantage of being equipped with a fighting style that could prove to be rather awkward to come up against, while proving to be very effective for the instigator, thus making it generally better to have in their range.
